The Buddhism Behind Bars Project
Buddhism Behind Bars is a book being sponsored by Wildmind. Wildmind has been soliciting manuscripts and arranging for budding (or buddhing!) inmate writers to have personal coaching in writing. Once we have enough manuscripts that we consider to be relatively “polished” we’ll submit the collection to publishers.
We aim to make copies of Buddhism Behind Bars available free of charge to inmates. To help us reach as many inmates as possible, please consider making a donation to support our work.
Buddhism Behind Bars is a compilation of writings by inmates and prison volunteers from across the world. In it you’ll read accounts of how meditation and Buddhist practice have transformed lives, bringing insight where there was delusion, kindness where there was violence, and peace where there was turmoil.
You’ll learn about the bad decisions that led people to commit serious offenses, the pressures of life behind bars, and the struggle to develop awareness and to bring about personal transformation in a bitterly unsupportive environment.
You’ll learn about the challenges, frustrations, and rewards of going into prison as a volunteer.
Writing for Buddhism Behind Bars
If you are a prison volunteer or if you know an inmate who you think may be interested in writing for our book, you can download our Contributors’ Guidelines to send to them.
We’re happy to hear from any inmate or volunteer, although we can’t of course promise we’ll publish every piece.
We’ll be providing writing tutors for inmates whose writing we think will be a good fit for this publication.
