I like the emphasis on the self's dynamic capability for change and growth daily! You have a follower in me! Also, I am writing a dissertation on the self, in addition to studying buddhist philosophy, so I am thrilled to find you.

The first quote is from a 1916 book of his called "Democracy and Education," which you can find on Google Books. Search for that exact quote (in quotation marks) and it will come up. The second quote is mine -- it's a pullquote from the article. Google Books is a good place to find original sources, as is Amazon (not many people know you can do phrase searches on Amazon).

Hello Bodhipaksa,
Thank you for an inspiring text. I'm curious about the quotes you use especially the following “The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action.” and "We can come to the realization that the self is not a thing but a process… ". I'm doing a paper on Dewey and the self, and I'm wondering if you would be so kind as to inform me about where in Dewey's texts you found the quotes?

After reading this article, I have clarity on "taking responsibility for our lives", because we make choices moment by moment on everything that we do, say, or act on. Even the choice to do nothing is a choice. These are our choices, therefore, what manifest from these choices is solely our own.

I feel if we pay attention as to hoe and why we made a choice, we will see how we live our lives. Thank you for this article. I will read it each day prior to my sitting practice. For this I am grateful
