How to get rid of resentment


Ann Lamott, in her novel Crooked Little Heart, says that holding onto resentment is like eating rat poison and waiting for the rat to die.

Resentment is seductive. We assume on some level that it’s going to help us, but it doesn’t. It just causes us pain.

This is something that just about all of us need help with.

1600 years ago, a compiler and commenter of Buddhist texts called Buddhaghosa put together an extraordinary “tool kit” of ways to deal with resentment. I was recently looking at this guidance, which is part of Buddhaghosa’s encyclopedic work on meditation, The Visuddhi Magga, or Path of Purity, and thought it was so fresh, well thought-out, and relevant that it was worth restating some of what he had to say.

Twelve techniques for getting rid of resentment

1. Lovingkindness practice

This one’s pretty obvious — if you’re a meditator at least. You can simply call to mind the person you’re resentful of, and cultivate good will toward them. We have a whole section of this site devoted to teaching the metta bhavana (development of lovingkindness) practice, so I won’t say much about that here, except that it does work! When I first started practicing meditation I had a lot of problems with resentment, and I was often surprised by how quickly my anger and resentment toward someone would just vanish.

2. Reflect that resentment is never justified

Buddhaghosa suggests that we “reflect upon the saw.”

This one needs a bit of unpacking. There’s a “Simile of the Saw” in the early Buddhist scriptures, where the Buddha says that even if bandits brutally sawed a person limb from limb, “he who entertained hate in his heart would not be one that carried out my teaching.” In other words, it doesn’t matter what the provocation is, hatred is never justified. The mind can go “but … but …” as much as it likes, but hatred remains a negative emotion that destroys our happiness, causes suffering for others, and prevents us from experiencing peace.

Pretty much all of us, though, carry around the idea that there’s such a thing as “righteous resentment.” And we assume that hatred is justified. We tell ourselves stories about how bad the other person is, and this seems to make it natural for us to hate them. What we’re not doing is taking responsibility for our ill will. It’s our interpretation of other people’s actions that makes us hate them. We cause our own hate.

Don’t take the parable of the saw literally. Of course (unless you’re an advanced practitioner of superhuman stature) you’d experience hatred toward an aggressor who was torturing you. That wouldn’t mean that you weren’t a Buddhist — but it would mean that in the moment of hatred you would not “be one that carried out [the Buddha’s] teaching.” The point of the parable is simply to undermine the idea of “righteous resentment.”

Incidentally, some Tibetan monks and nuns who have been brutally tortured by Chinese security forces have avoided developing hatred toward their tormentors by means of compassion — reflecting that their torturers are building up bad karma for themselves.

3. Winning the real battle

Hot on the heels of the advice to reflect on the parable of the saw is an admonition to reflect that in developing hatred you’re actually giving a person who hates you what they want. (This is assuming that the other person hates you, which isn’t always the case.)

What does a person who hates you want for you? Bad stuff, that’s what. Buddhaghosa points out that hatred makes you ugly, causes you pain, destroys your good fortune, causes you to lose your wealth (or not to create any, perhaps because you’re distracted), detracts from your reputation, loses you friends, and leads to a bad rebirth. This is all bad stuff.

Someone who really hated you might wish all these things on you, and here you are doing them to yourself! You’re handing your hater victory. You’re doing him or her a favor. And by getting angry at an angry person, Buddhaghosa says, you become worse than them, and “do not win the battle hard to win,” which is of course the battle with yourself, to remain happy and unruffled.

So basically, we reflect here that true victory can’t come from getting angry at an angry person. That’s defeat. Victory comes from remaining calm, loving, and equanimous.

4. “Accentuate the positive”

Buddhaghosa suggests that we think about something positive in the other person, so that you can “remove irritation.”

This works, too. Resentment doesn’t like complexity. When you bear in mind someone’s good points — even things (dammit!) that we admire — it’s harder to keep the resentment going.

5. Develop compassion

But if you can’t think of anything positive about the other person, or if they truly don’t have any positive qualities (although that’s almost impossible) then you should develop compassion toward them. In Buddhaghosa’s world view, a person with no redeeming qualities is bound for the torments of the hell realms, and is therefore worthy of our compassion. I should stress that in Buddhism the hells are not permanent and are not punishments — they are simply places where we are reborn for a while as a result of our actions. Buddhist hells are a kind of “fat farm” where we burn off our bad karma.

6. Notice how you’re causing yourself suffering

As Ann Lamott points out, resentment hurts us. Buddhaghosa offers many reflections along those lines:

If another person has hurt us, why should we then hurt ourselves? In your life you’ve had to give up many things that brought you happiness, so why not walk away from resentment, which makes you miserable? If another person has done something we disapprove of, then why do something (like getting angry) that we would also disapprove of? If someone wants you to get angry, why give them the satisfaction? You may make the other person suffer with your anger. Then again you may not. But you’ll definitely hurt yourself. The thing you got angry about is impermanent and in the past. So why are you angry now?

He’s kind of unrelenting, that Buddhaghosa.

7. Reflect that all beings are the owners of their karma

This is a common reflection in Buddhism: all beings create their own actions (kamma) and inherit the consequences of those actions. The other person may have done things that are unskillful, and those actions will cause them suffering. So what’s the point of you doing exactly the same thing, by acting out of the unskillful state of resentment? It’s like picking up a hot coal to throw at the other person. You may hurt them, but you’re definitely going to hurt yourself.

The other person, if they are angry with you, is causing themselves pain. It’s like, Buddhaghosa says, them throwing a handful of dust into the wind. They may be aiming at you, but it’s their eyes that will end up smarting.

Reflecting in this way we can untangle our respective lives. The other person’s faults, real or imagined, are no longer an occasion for us to exercise our own faults.

8. Reflect on exemplars of patience

Buddhaghosa goes a bit over the top with this one, devoting almost as much time on this method of dispelling resentment as he does on all the others put together. His approach is to remind us of various past lives of the Buddha, or jataka tales, as they’re called. These are mythological stories about the Buddha’s previous lives, as he developed the qualities of compassion and wisdom that led to his awakening.

I’ve found that being in the presence of someone who is very patient causes me to let go of my resentments. I had a good friend in Scotland who I never — not once — heard say an unkind word about anyone. Sometimes I’d be bitching about someone else, and my friend would just come in with some wise and kind word about the other person’s life that would put everything in perspective and leave me feeling a bit petty about having ranted. Even now, just calling that friend to mind helps me evoke a sense of patience.

9. Reflect that all beings have been your dearest friends and relations in a previous life

I’m not big on past lives, or in belief in rebirth generally, but if you do take that kind of thing seriously, then Buddhaghosa’s advice is to remember that because of the beginninglessness of time, every being — including those you get most pissed off with — have been your mother, father, brother, sister, son, and daughter. When that person was your mother, they carried you in their womb, suckled you, wiped away your snot and shit, and generally lavished you with love. And we can reflect, Buddhaghosa says, thus: “So, it is unbecoming for me to harbor hate for him [or her] in my mind.”

Being one of a scientific bent, and not putting much stock in reflections that rely on assuming that rebirth is a reality rather than a myth, or perhaps a metaphor, I find myself approaching this advice in a different way. Let’s take rebirth as a metaphor: change is happening all the time, and so we’re each reborn in every moment. Each moment we die and are reborn.

Each momentary contact with the world is part of this process of death and rebirth. In fact, each perception is a kind of birth. It’s the birth of a new experience, and thus of a new “us.” Each contact that we have with another being is part of this process. Each time we see someone, hear someone, touch someone, even think or someone, a new experience arises and a new being is born. So in this way, all beings that we have contact with are our mothers. Each being we have contact with in this moment helps give birth to the being that exists in this moment. And since, in our immensely complex world, the unfolding, never-ending death-and-rebirth of each being is ultimately connected with the never-ending death-and-rebirth of each other being, all beings are our mothers.

10. Reflect on the benefits of lovingkindness

You can reflect on the benefits of lovingkindness, and how you’ll deny yourself those benefits by indulging in resentment. What are the benefits? Well, it’s worth reflecting on that through examining your own experience, but here’s Buddhaghosa’s list, which comes from the scriptures: You’ll sleep in comfort, wake in comfort, and dream no evil dreams. You’ll be dear to human beings and to non-human beings. Deities will guard you. Fire and poison and weapons won’t harm you (although that seems unlikely, to say the least). More plausibly, your mind will be easily concentrated. You’ll be reborn in a pleasant realm (or at the very least the future you that arises will have more a pleasant existence than the being that would have arisen had lovingkindness not been a part of its previous existence).

Some of these are plausible. There is scientific research showing that there are health benefits, and mental health benefits, from practicing lovingkindness meditation. Friendly people generally seem to have a more pleasant experience of the world, with less conflict and more fulfilling experience of others. You’ll deny yourself these benefits if you indulge in resentment. Resentment is the saturated fat of emotions, clogging the arteries of our happiness.

11. Break the other person into tiny pieces

Mentally (not physically!) we can dissolve the object of our resentment into various elements, asking ourselves what exactly we’re angry with. Is it the head hairs, the body hairs, the nails, the teeth, etc? Is it the solid matter making up that person, the liquid, the gas, the energy?

This might seem a little silly. In fact it seemed silly to me, right up to the moment that I tried it. There had been resistance to the idea, because I thought, “Well, of course I’m not angry with any of those things, I’m angry with them — with the person as a whole. But setting that resistance aside, and just reflecting on the bits that make up a person takes you away from the thought of them “as a whole” and you temporarily can’t be angry with them!

As Buddhaghosa says, “When he tries the resolution into elements, his anger finds no foothold, like a mustard seed on the point of a needle.”

He’s right.

12. Give a gift

This one’s delightfully straightforward and earthy. If you give the other person a gift — especially something you value — then you break the dynamic of your resentment. You shake things up within yourself. You have to think of the other person as a human being with needs. You have to think about what they might like. You stop your mind from going around and around in the same old rut of complaining. You have to let go of your damned pride. You have to take a risk. You have to make yourself vulnerable.

And giving to the other person changes the dynamic of the relationship. If there’s mutual resentment, then you may shock the other person into seeing you differently.

Buddhaghosa points out that giving naturally leads to kind speech:

Through giving gifts they do unbend
And condescend to kindly speech.

Of course you may be thinking something along the lines of, “Wait! I hate this person; why on earth would I give them something?”

But that just brings up another question. Do you want to end your resentment?

    I have been a novice practitioner for years and even though, I still can find “new” (but really uncovering somewhat unconcious) areas of old traumas, pains, hurts, and other mental & emotional baggage. And when I entered a Google search of ‘how to release resentment the Buddhist way?’ your thoughtful writing appeared. As I contemplated the ancient teachings and mentions of also timeless parables, I found comfort and tools. I am grateful and appreciate that in this moment I was able to honor your request for a donation in support of your offering of support to humanity on whole via the internet. I have always been a believer in the fact that I manifest my resentment and ultimately I am responsible for having them or not. This is real power.   • I have had feelings of resentment for 17 years towards my husbands ex wife after she tormented me for the first five years of our relationship. She has physically attacked me, followed me, harassed me for years via telephone calls etc. My husband has recently been able to connect with his daughter since she is an adult. I now find myself reliving those dreadful years when his daughter is mentioned … I need to know how to get past this for myself. Any help you can offer would be wonderful….Thank You!

      Gosh. I managed to overlook your comment for a long, long time. Apologies.

      Resentment is interesting. To experience it one has to be wronged or have someone you care about wronged, but also to feel that one is responsible in some way — usually having a sense that one could have acted differently. So the ill will is focused both outward, toward the person who acted badly, and inward, toward oneself. I’d suggest an inside-out approach, where you develop compassion for the suffering you experience as a result of your blame and self-blame. This sets the path for letting go of the resentment you have toward your husband’s ex-wife. Here’s someplace you could start. You’ll also find many other articles on self-compassion on our site.

  • this all sounds wonderful in print but harder in practice since most is deep seeded hurt.. you cant just wish your feelings away by wishing someone well… it may change the moment but the not the resentment….. being tortured and feeling bad for captores karma???? really…. i dont believe a word of that, it is not natural

    • Hi, Melanie.

      Once you do compassion or lovingkindness meditation you’ll find that what you say about feelings isn’t true at all. Sure, we don’t “wish them away.” No one suggested we do. But feelings are things that we produce, internally, as a result of our interpretations of the world. And if you change your filters, then you change the feelings you have.

      For example, if a friend is late for meeting you, you might feel hurt, because part of your filtering of that experience is the assumption that your friend doesn’t care about you. When you later learn that your friend was late because they were involved in an accident, your feelings will be very different. Just questioning your assumptions (e.g. considering that your friend may have been delayed because of circumstances outside their control) can change how you feel. And if you no longer are producing intensely unpleasant feelings, then there’s nothing to support your resentment.

      Lovingkindness and compassion meditation change our filters in the same kind of way. Some of the techniques suggested above involve that.

      The “natural” state of the mind is polluted with greed, hatred, and delusion. Why would you want to cling to that when you could purify it instead?

    What about resenting a life situation?

    • Sorry for the delayed reply, but I’m just back from ten days on retreat.

      I wonder what’s going on when we resent a life situation. Say we’re resentful about not having enough money. There might be thoughts in which we blame ourselves, or in which we blame others. I think the teachings in this post can be applied to both of those situations.

      We might be resentful because the weather’s too hot. But resentment means “feeling indignant because of unfair treatment.” Who’s treating you unfairly when it’s hot? I suppose the problem there is falsely assuming that there’s some kind of agency at work, as if the weather is out to get you. People often talk that way, in fact, trying to make themselves look pitiful (or important?) by saying “it always rains when I plan a picnic.” My suggestion there would be to drop the false view of impersonal forces having personal agency. The weather is just the weather. Being resentful about it is pointless. You can’t control the weather, but you can choose to drop resentful thoughts, and to practice acceptance.

  • WOW, I have so many anger, resentment, and hate issues, this list weather written by an enlightened soul or a fake changed my perspective on life and about myself. Thank you for writing it and sharing it. You are great in my book. As for HARLEIGH, coming from a true hater…. I can tell you that you are a hater. This is a positive place, where people with questions come to try to find a solution and better themselves. To take the time and come in this positive place and preach and show off your “knowledge” of the topic seems to me (who knows nothing on the topic) to contradict the practice completely. see im hating again. So I accept your point of view, but please feel free to create your own site, books, and try to help others. Let everyone decide their own karma for themselves, and focus on helping people see the way. Focusing on someone else’s life will only drift you farther away from yours. I just learned that from reading the list on top ;)
    Bodhipaksa, I do not care why you do what you do. if you make a buck good for you. you are not selling dope or hurting anyone. I cant see this list hurting anyone. This list is something that an atheist like myself, that is a little broken inside can use to put himself back together again. I thank you deeply.

  • If you are resenting someone, you are really resting an aspect of yourself, so you must deal with it – it’s all about you, and no one else is out there.

    I am not Buddhist, I do not believe in it, and I certainly disagree with all this loving- feeling and gifting nonsense, but I am familiar with the nature of reality and I know how it manifests itself.

    All individuals or sentient beings are an expression of reality; a person who is interacting with you is an expression of your own reality which appears to you as an individual who needs to interact with you at that moment, because deep down YOU need to resolve an issue that needs your immediate attention. So, if you are resentful towards someone, you are really dealing with an aspect of yourself that seeks resolution of some sort which YOU deem neglected, therefore, it needs your immediate attention.

    It is all about you, not anyone else, nor that person who you’re resenting, that person does not exist, it’s simply an expression of YOUR own reality which you have created out of the need for interaction with your inner self, an aspect of yourself that seeks resolution. It’s all about you, you are resting an aspect of yourself, so you must deal with it urgently.

  • Thank you for posting this. It really helped me. I’ve been in “Buddhist hell” for the last 3 days trying to climb out. I reacted as gracefully and lovingly to a family member’s verbal attack, and found that it created a ball of anger I couldn’t shake. Somehow I thought an apology would be coming my way, and that would make me feel better. Apology never came…the ball of anger grew. I still wonder if I handled it well, it crosses my mind that I should have pushed back so that it doesn’t happen again…feeling vulnerable I guess, but like #12 says, do I really want to end my resentment/anger? I do!

    I’m in the thick of a situation where I’m feeling very pushed around and manipulated, and I am trying to be clear enough to find and honor whatever is reasonable in what these others expect of me. At the same time, I feel resentment towards them for being hostile and aggressive with me. So this essay today, and the posts. Are helpful in giving me a breathing space.

  • Harleigh, the feelings you describe are all too familiar to me! I tend to refer to this state of mind when it arises on me as ‘righteous indignation’.

    When I find myself asking myself ‘How can I deal with this person’ I have found Buddhaghosa’s guidelines really helpful. They are varied, so I can usually find one method that suits the mind state that I’m in at the time.

    But I’ve found that a key question for me is ‘What do I mean by ‘deal with’? More often than not, it’s not my responsibility to change the person’s behaviour and attitude, so I have to conclude that what I actually mean is ‘How do I deal with the aversion that this person’s behaviour and attitude arouses in me?’

    And, for me, once I’ve remembered this, everything starts to become clearer.

    I find it helpful to remind myself of point 7 – the person’s actions will have their own results, for which they are responsible, so in theory, at least, I can leave them to it. If I’m, say, their boss, or their mother, of course, I might need to take some action on that account, but that is to do with my own responsibilities. Ideally it isn’t the righteous indignation which is fuelling my actions, and if they don’t take any notice of good advice, rules and regulations etc, that’s up to them.

    And I do find point 5 helpful, since as soon as I ask myself what it would be like to be in a mind state that would give rise to the sort of behaviour you describe, I conclude that they can’t possibly be all that happy, and that reflection in itself starts to engender some compassion, which untangles my own state of mind. I’ve found that this exercise comes with practice, though – to begin with the reflection felt somewhat formulaic, but it seems that the habit of thinking this way does start to take root.

    Point 12 is good fun, I find, and particularly helpful if I’m beating myself up about something (not an infrequent occurrence!). In fact I’d developed a version of this technique for myself so it’s really interesting to learn that it’s a traditional teaching.

    I had an MRI scan a couple of years ago, and was privileged to see a video of my own aortic valve pumping blood, as it seemed, straight towards me! Having never seen it before, I’d never developed any sort of ‘story’ about it, and one of the first things that came to mind was that whatever my emotional state was – whatever was metaphorically ‘in my heart’ wouldn’t actually be felt and interpreted by that valve. And I’ve called that thought to mind to get a sense of perspective whenever I’ve felt overwhelmed by emotion, to good effect.

  • Annicca. “impermanence” (which has been actively misused by the modern buddhist community). By asking specifically within the strictures of the set 12 guidelines, annicca was being ignored.

    As for the rest, the goal is not to fix anyone but to not have buddhism cheapened by ego pursuits.

    Even Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche pointed out there are those that will NEVER gain the benefits of buddhism, as they have reached the demonic state of egohood.

    These types of people have turned buddhism into a private clique, a club of status and exclusion.

    Is that not the opposite of buddhism, as well as the hindu and vedic roots from which it originated?

    Fixing them? There is no hope for these people.

    If they didn’t develop in the years they have had until they have reached adulthood, they never will.

    But losing the integrity of buddhism?

    THAT concerns me.

    it concerns me greatly.

    • Well, I’m concerned about the integrity of the Buddhist tradition as well, but “the integrity of buddhism” is a rather heavy burden to carry on one’s shoulders. Realistically, the best chance for maintaining the integrity of the Buddhist tradition is to work on oneself intensely and to gain enlightenment. And again, the integrity of the Buddhist tradition is not served by being overly caught up in how other people who call themselves Buddhists are practicing.

      (And it’s spelled with one “n” and not two.) I’m still unclear about what point you’re trying to make, however. I wasn’t asking you to “strictly” stick to anything, but rather I was asking you to reflect more deeply on the teachings in the post, since it seemed that your question was already answered in there.

  • I am asking about in it’s entirety.
    We can allow ourselves to be trapped in guidelines if we wish, (3 & 5) but does that not also conflict with Annicca?
    My question stems from experience with those that have used buddhism as a way to gain notoriety. To feel special, to feed their ego, and also as an escape from responsibility of their actions toward others.
    Those that essentially say they never need be sorry for their actions due to buddhism (in error) stating that one should just forgive them and move on.
    My question is when someone uses buddhism as a tool it was not intended for, what then?
    Let them gain what they wish?
    A safe haven from past responsibility? (we both know that will just be a repeat of the past in a cycle over and over again)
    Or do you take the tool away from them, putting it away until they learn to use it correctly?

    • Well, what would you intend to do? Fix their lives for them? Their lives are not yours to fix, and we have enough trouble sorting out our own affairs. If you think that Buddhist practice is about getting other people to behave, then aren’t you mis-using the Dharma just as much as the people whose actions you’re decrying?

      If you see someone mis-using their power as a spiritual teacher in order to hurt people, then by all means shout warnings from the rooftops in order to help safeguard others, and take whatever legal and institutional steps you can to dislodge them from a position of authority. If the situation’s not as dire as that, you can try dialog. If that doesn’t work then you’re back to accepting that they have their life (and karma) and you have yours (#7). And you can reflect on how continued obsession with wanting to change something that you cannot change is only going to cause you suffering (#6).

      I don’t understand your question about anicca, I’m afraid.

      • wow that really hit home as my daughter who I was really close to has distanced herself almost completely from me her dad and the rest of her family since following a Canadian “teacher” John de Rutier and I am so sad hurt angry and confused

  • Though I do mostly agree with what you have written, how do you deal with someone that is buddhist in name only, using it as a narcissistic symbol of status, that spits back at you that you must forgive them because that is the way of the buddha, only so they will never have to apologize or be responsible for their actions toward others?

    I have seen this used repeatedly by new spiritualists and thus a twisting of the dharma.

    How do you address that?
